On the Road - Albert Lea MN - Wall SD

Albert Lea MN - Wall SD:  460 miles (740 km).

I90, a straight shot across Minnesota and South Dakota.  From gently rolling farmland to some contour and dry ranch farms to the beginning of the badlands. Some fun tidbits ...

  • a few spots where trees have been planted as windbreaks
  • some huge wind farms
  • the wind farm nursery - a plant where the turbine towers are built, right alongside I90
  • the speed limit in South Dakota on I90 is 80 mph?  Yup.
  • logs of long, long stretches of fabulous pavement, lots more under construction - drop you speed down to 65 mph and share the highway with oncoming traffic, separated by thin little traffic cones.  And lots of long stretches of pavement that feels like cordoroy.
  • it is a terrible combination to drive into the sunset, driving 80 mph, on cordoroy pavement
  • my fitbit is having a fabulous workout!  Worn on my arm, today it recorded +25,000 steps and 292 flights of stairs.  Me, I experienced eight hours driving my motorcycle and two flights of stairs.
Only one photo stop today - just getting to the Badlands in SD, about 45 minutes from Wall ...

On the road - Sunday Aug 30 - Harbor Springs MI to Albert Lea MN

Harbor Springs MI -> Tunnel of Trees scenic highway -> Mackinaw Bridge -> Rapid River MI for lunch -> Michigan / Wisconsin #41 around Lake Michigan to Oshkosh -> #21 to Tomah MN -> I94 -> I90 to Albert Lea MN

619 miles, or in Canadian, 996 km.

Fog when we headed out, warmed up nicely!  Mackinaw bridge was not scary - no construction, no high winds - easy peasy :)

Lots of construction.  Crossing into Minnesota, no more cement protector-things - just wee little orange columns.

If we're not 'broken in' then we are maybe just broken.

Luckily we changed time zones - got longer to get to our scheduled destination.

619 miles is too long for the communicator batteries to last - lost them with an hour to go.  Also too long for cell phones - had to recharge on the go.  Both critical because I listen to my music from my phone thru my communicator headset.  Heaven forbid I should have empty air - too many wild random thoughts popping here!  there!  way over there!  wait - up here too!

All the time on the bikes, no pictures today!

On the Road Again! Happy bits everywhere

We did it - got ourselves out the door and on the road!

Stopped in Flint MI to see McLaren General Hospital.  One of the heard-for-years stories is that there is a bronze bust of Margaret McLaren, Don's great-aunt.  She was a nurse and became Superintendent of McLaren Hospital.

We didn't find the bust, but we did find a lovely portrait and plaques, and a history wall honouring the hospital history.

We traveled northwards through towards the Mackinaw Bridge - found a nice landing spot at Harbor Springs, MI - plan tomorrow to start the day travelling through the 'Tunnel of Trees' before crossing the bridge and heading west.
We were wet much of the day, but it was warm and we eventually gave up and put our Frogg Toggs on.  In some spots there weren't even any clouds and it was still raining!

Fun dinner at the Sassy Loon Bar & Grill, with a delightful Coconut Lime Margarita to start!

Most despicable sign spotted today ... "Black Lives Matter" ... co-opted by Right-To-Life.

And somehow in my head when I saw the "Elk Crossing" signs, I interpreted those as town signs, not warning signs... arggg!
